Pros and Cons of being a Housewife

It is quite difficult to explain why many women prefer calling themselves as ‘homemakers’ or ‘stay at home moms’ instead of ‘housewife’. Behavioral researches and studies state that in the past couple of decades, it has become very un-cool for a woman to be full time at home or give up her career after marriage, in favor of managing her household. Many brides-to-be have confirmed that some of the questions their fiends asked them after their engagement were,

“What about your job/career?”

“Will you work after marriage?”

“How can you simply be at home after studying so much?”

Many girls have heard this, though jokingly, “what is the use of studying so much, when you’ll eventually have to marry?

What is wrong in being a ‘homemaker’, especially if it is a person’s conscious decision? And for that matter, can’t housewives be well-educated or is it taboo for a college-educated woman to be a housewife/homemaker? We should not undermine the effort of a housewife/homemaker, just because she isn’t paid and therefore doesn’t add to the GDP of the country; it’s not about being paid, it’s about being valued, and everything a woman does to make the home comfortable for her family is simply invaluable.
